Mock Newbery Discussion

Yesterday, a combined group of Children's and Young Adult librarians at the Arlington County Department of Libraries held a mock Newbery Award discussion. The books read for this discussion were:

The Wanderer, by Sharon Creech Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo Joey Pigza Loses Control, by Jack Gantos Nory Ryan's Song, by Patricia Reilly Giff The Stowaway, by Karen Hesse Gold Dust, by Chris Lynch A Year Down Yonder, by Richard Peck At the Sign of the Star, by Katherine Sturtevant

Because we are a small system and do not purchase vast quantities of each fiction title, we made part of our list up early so that staff would be able to get the books. Those books added later (The Stowaway, for example) were not read by everyone because of difficulty in getting them from our vendor on time.

That said, the discussion was lively and included a variety of opinions on all of the books. The mock award went to A Year Down Yonder. The honor books were The Wanderer and Nory Ryan's Song. Unlike the actual Newbery Committee, we just did a straight (and very unscientific) vote.
