I did not have the opportunity to meet Gwendolyn Brooks, but an unforgettable memory - I shared her Bronzeville Boys and Girls with some 4th grade youngsters in an alleged school of "disavantaged" children. We read several pieces, and on the spur of the moment I asked which one appealed to each one the most. It was almost unanimous that they wanted me to read again and again
"John who was Poor." I did not ask why - I would not ask why - but after all these years I have never forgotten the choice.
