Younger YASilent to the Bone by E.L. Konigsberg- Yes, I do consider this YA. Although as a mystery, the plot has holes in it you could drive a car through, the writing is exquisitely calibrated emotionally. The dinner party scene made my hair stand on end. Question: Is Vivian a veela?;) When Kambia Elaine Flew in From Neptune by Lori A. WilliamsThis has some plot holes, too, but also has the year's juiciest dialogue and finest, fully-rounded characters. Shayla, her mother and grandmother are so vibrant they seem ready to leap off the page, and Kambia is unforgettably haunting. If people talk like this in Houston, I want to go there just to listen to them.
Mature YALife Is Funny by E.R. Frank- What an achievement in narrative voice, each so distinctive and real. Weakened at the end (two supermodels?) This certainly pushes the envelope of YA sexual explicitness, doesn't it?
