I think the book that wowed me most this year (even though it was published in 1999, by Front Street Books) was Gabrielle Vincent's "A day, a dog." This wordless picture book depicting a day in the life of a cast-off dog is breath-taking in its simplicty. There is power and emotion in every one of the brief, sketchy lines of Vincent's drawing; and the story, while fairly simple, has enough ambiguity for thorough discussion.
I instantly bought this book to use as a starting point for creative writing classes. I also bought it because it is beautiful, and because it captures, better than any book I have ever seen, the body language of dogs.
