Gwendolyn Brooks' greatness came not just from her ability to capture the black experience but also the human experience regardless of race. I'd like to add to Violet's tribute with the words written by the poet in a privately commissioned poem on the death of a child:
"Today
You are real and not real.
We shut our eyes and we see you
We open our eyes and you are gone.
But the premiums of our alliance
are to keep!--to adjust, to consult and sort over,
to add to our life and, therefore,
to your own."
