Because so many recommended it, I took out ANGUS, THONGS AND FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING, by Louise Rennison and began to read it. Although it must be the best title ever for a YA novel, I found the book itself very disappointing and put it down only half way through. The voice seemed contrived and the characters one-dimensional.
Part of the problem was that I kept comparing it in my mind to CELINE by Brock Cole. CELINE is an absolute jewel of a book, with an off?at, intelligent, laugh-out-loud funny heroine whose voice is perfectly rendered. I can't praise this novel enough; I've read it many times and am always moved--and awed at Brock Cole's ability to bring this 16-yr-old girl to life.
