The book I feel is the most distinguished contribution to literature for children published in the U.S. during the preceding year is JIM THE BOY by Tony Earley, published this past June by Little Brown. It is the story of a 10-year-old boy who slowly becomes aware of the world around him as he is raised by his mother and three uncles. The writing is lyrical and deep, and reminds me in a way of THE YEARLING. I'm not sure if this is eligible for any children's book awards because it may have been published by the adult side of Little Brown, but it is certainly deserving, and I hope it is on people's radar screens. Best wishes for a terrific new year -- Gregory J. Holch (Author; and Editor of Scholastic's TAB Book Club)
