In general, I like the way Gary Paulsen tells stories. So I had to read The Beet Fields: Memories of a Sixteenth Summer. Something about the hunger, the hard knocks, the driving flow appealed to me. But, to reference last month's discussion, talk about blurring the line between history and fiction! (Insert smile here.) The thing I liked best about Beet Fields was
"finding out things," especially, the mystery of being a man. What men do. What it means to be one. The tyranny of the yearning for respect and the foolish or necessary acts that earn it. The severity of freedom.
I also really liked So You Want To Be President (St. George and Small). Again, hearkening back to last month's discussion, I'd like to see someone bring to life the skinny-dipping scene with John Quincy Adams and the woman reporter!
