In response to Lee -
Homeless Bird did win the National Book Award. I liked it, too, though I have to say, I had just finished Suzanne Fisher Staples's Shabanu with my class when I read Gloria Whelan's Homeless Bird, and I felt the prose in Homeless Bird was indeed simple and poetic but not nearly as rich and the story not as involving as in Shabanu, a book similar in theme and setting and intended audience. I liked some of the other National Book Award finalists a lot. Carolyn Coman's Many Stones is superb, and Forgotten Fire by Adam Bagdasarian is a horrifying story eloquently told. Jerry Stanley's Hurry Freedom is one of the best nonfiction books of the year, a story of African Americans in the California Gold Rush.
