THE COLOR OF MY WORDS by Lynn Joseph . . . This has been a sleeper hit among many of my fifth grade girls, becoming the favorite of several. A small gem.

THE WORD EATER by Mary Amato . . . It took me awhile to warm up to this one, but when I finally came around, I found it very enjoyable. My students have had similar reactions. Light, funny read.

CLICK CLACK MOO by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin . . . Oh, I loved this one too! How can you not root for those subversive cows!

JIM THE BOY by Tony Earley . . . I haven't read this one yet, and I'm sure it's wonderful, but in a year so rich with great children's books, it's difficult (if not impossible) to root for this to win the Newbery.

MOCK NEWBERY . . . I've enjoyed reading the results of both the CCBC group and the Virginia library group, and have shared them with my class. We have been doing our own mock Newbery for the past four months, reading and sharing some thirty different titles. Students are finishing up their final reading over the holiday break and then we will discuss and vote according to the procedures I fished out of the CCBC-Net archives. Favorites so far seem to include BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, JOEY PIGZA LOSES CONTROL, ERETH'S BIRTHDAY, SILENT TO THE BONE, THE WANDERER, IT'S RAINING PIGS AND NOODLES, A YEAR DOWN YONDER, ESPERANZA RISING, and (our guilty pleasure) THE WHITE FOX CHRONICLES.
