The 2001 ChLA Conference will be held in Buffalo, New York from June 6 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in downtown Buffalo. Note the start day of Wednesday, not Thursday, as has often been the case with recent conferences. Since four bridges in the metropolitan Buffalo area connect the United States with Canada, the theme of the conference is "Bridges,"meaning both literal and metaphorical bridges. Examples are links between literary periods, literary genres, writers and readers, countries or cultures, adult and children's literature, or even universes.
Confirmed conference speakers include fantasy and science fiction writer Bruce Coville, young adult author and creative writing professor Alexandria LaFaye, young adult fantasy writer Robin McKinley, multicultural and historical diary author Carolyn Meyer, Tennessee poet laureate Margaret Britton Vaughn, and Chinese?nadian cultural author Paul Yee. Peter Dickinson, the 2001 Phoenix Award winner, will give the banquet address and be on hand for the Phoenix panel and for book signings of his Phoenix book The Seventh Raven. Conference events will include entertainment on opening night, a visit from the Director of the Osborne Collection in Toronto and possibly a visit to the collection as well, a trip to Niagara Falls, receptions, book sales and signings, and almost continuous refreshment catering.
For more information, please contact Dr. Craig Werner or Dr. Karen Sands O'Connor, CHLA 2001, English Department, Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY 14222; fax, 716?8W00; email, wernercg at buffalostate.edu or sandsk at bscmail.buffalostate.edu.
