A nice thing about this discussion of favorites is that it points us toward books we've missed or overlooked. Ginny Moore Kruse recommended At the Sign of the Star, a book I hadn't read. So, I went out, got it, read it, and loved it. Set in 1677, it's the story of Meg Moore, a bookseller's daughter, who in the opening chapter sees a comet. The sighting sets the tone for this quiet, intelligent novel, a meditation on fate, books, and the role of women in society. I've added it to my list of favorites for the year. As Ginny said, "Don't miss it."
