My favorites for reading to groups this year:

Preschool- How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague: The text is so simple but perfectly chosen and the interplay of text and pictures is fasinating and humorous. This has joined a select group of pictures books that always has someone (or several) saying, "read it again."

Grades 3-4- The Secret of the Stones by Robert San Souci and James Ransome: I have actually had kids cry as I read this book and someone (or several) invariably say, "That was a good story." The theme of orphaned and mistreated children finding parents who love them hits kids where they live.

Grades 5-6- The Girl Who Spun Gold by Virginia Hamilton and Leo and Diane Dillon: The colloquial but poetic language and perfect pacing make this Rumplestiltskin variant read out loud like a dream, even for the most blase upper elementary students.
