I've had the same experience with the kid turning up his/her nose (see below). I think Robin's idea of grabbing the teachable moment and helping the whole class understand the use of this type of book is a very good idea. It would be eye-opening for many, I'm sure. In a K-2 school as I am, I think it is fine to make a nonfiction fact book into a story, but I think the straight fact books attract children more. Children certainly prefer photos to drawings or paintings when they look for nonfiction. A girl today turned down Dick King-Smith's excellent book on guinea pigs because it wasn't "real." She glanced at the beautiful illustrations and rejected it flat out!!
