Just a side note on the effect of teachers' fears of not doing a good job teaching something, which is part of this discussion, though I think not explicitly stated.... While reading a Greek myth, I mentioned to the kids that people used to think the world was flat. No one among the first or second graders knew about Columbus. In Madison teachers have stopped talking about him! I think it is better to do a less than perfect job of teaching than to stop teaching everything controversial. So, by extension, even a flawed biography can at least start a conversation. And as many of you have said, who among us could ever write the PERFECT biography?
