Robin,
I too was going to mention Yolen and Regan's "Welcome to the..." books; actually, I discussed the Green House and the Sea of Sand in this week's Spirited Review
(http://www.littlefolktales.org/reviews). Each is such a lovely introduction to a particular place. I am looking forward to the fourth book in the series, "Welcome to the River of Grass"; I bet that it will make a nice regional unit together with Jean Craighead George and Wendell Minor's "Everglades"...?
Regarding genre, though, I think that the Welcome books are pure nonfiction - just poetic rather than prosaic. There isn't any story involved, or characters, etc. Do kids see these as "not real" just because they are in poetic form? (Christine?)
