I have encountered the same comment from young researchers (both for reports and for pleasure) and one of the things I have to be carful to do is to specifically ALWAYS refer to non-fiction as such, and never use the word STORIES (i.e. real stories)when I refer to them. A small distinction, perhaps, but one which helps somewhat.
