Monica,

I agree with you wholeheartedly. One thing I'd love to see history/social science teachers borrow from reading/language arts teachers, though, is the workshop approach (i.e. where students are taught specific skills in mini-lessons and then practice and experiment on their own).

A couple impediments to this (to add to your list of why adults use historical fiction in favor of nonfiction): 1) Adults have a difficult time finding primary (and secondary) source documents and artifacts. And 2) Adults have a difficult time getting multiple copies of non-textbook tertiary sources.
