A good article on this sort of fictionalized nonfiction (also known termed an "informational storybook") is Myra Zarnowski's "Learning history with informational storybooks: A social studies educator's perspective." The New Advocate, 8(3), 1836 (1995.) A later issue (I don't have the reference at hand) had a response by someone distinguishing learning about science this way from learning about history. The Magic School Bus came up in the second piece if not the first. (I'm not at home where I have my back copies of The New Advocate, but I bet someone else can find them both and post the relevant information.)
