the practical side of biographies

Jill and others:

We are in the thick of biography reports: Children need to read biographies and present a report on the person. Generally the student will have to dress up as that person and present information on their subject.

The problem is teachers require certain number of pages. The best written book will be put aside in favor of a book with the right number of pages (generally over 100). We have written teachers and informed parents that the arbitrary number 100 is unrealistic, but teachers insist on it.

Other things that would draw an audience (in the practical, assignment driven world we are in): books about people from Illinois (fill in the state), anything about Al Capone, pop culture over 100 pages (Brittany Spears or other flavor of the week), and individual saints!

It is maddening when you try and find the information the patron wants, find a great book on an interesting person and have it turned down because the teacher won't okay it. Thanks for listening.
