I was so pleased to see a recommendation of Lest We Forget I had to respond.
I agree wholeheartedly with Angelica Carpenter. Lest We Forget is a wonderful interactive book about American slavery. The author, Velma Maia Thomas, has used primary source materials in a very powerful way. It is surprising how much information she imparts in this succinct narrative. Also, this is an excellent book for introducing youngsters to primary source materials, and teaching them how to effectively use these materials.
