For a book similar to the one on hippie life, try Velma "Maia" Thomas'
_Lest We Forget_, a history of slavery in the U.S. It combines text and images, and some images are interactive. I don't have the book here, so am quoting from an Amazon.com review: "You can 'open' a rendering of a slave ship and witness its human cargo, packed cheek by jowl in coffinlike spaces. Elsewhere you can read a sales receipt for a slave woman, unfold a reproduction of the manumission papers a freedman carried to guarantee his freedom, or peruse a copy of Abraham Lincoln's handwritten Emancipatio Proclamation." This is a wonderful book for upper grade elementary students and also for adults. Angelica Carpenter, Curator, Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature
