Two books about history have made such an impression on me that I bought them for myself and recommend them often to library patrons of all ages. I wrote fan letters to the authors, too, and got nice letters back. The books are _Commodore Perry in the Land of the Shogun_ by Rhoda Blumberg (1985) and _When Jessie Came Across the Sea_ by Amy Hest
(1997). The latter is fiction, about a Jewish girl who comes to NYC at the beginning of this century. The two could go together with many others that discuss how one culture experiences another.
