Monica,

So, I asked a friend today why he thought might not be used in schools. His first guess was indeed because of the allegations of pedophilia ("unsavory references") -- and I too remember vague rumors of an inappropriate relationship between Carroll and Alice circulating around San Francisco about seven or eight years ago (I think there was a movie about them released at that time?), but none of the particulars.

His second thought was that the drug associations might have become too strong for some folks (i.e. The Jefferson Airplane's mushroom song), compounded no doubt by the weirdness of the tale itself. (One pill makes you larger, one pill makes you small - Alice taking trips to Wonderland and all...) With the current "war on" drugs (who came up with that ugly preposition usage, I wonder?), I wouldn't be surprised if seems too risky.

A last note on illustrations - at the bookstore tonight, I saw half a different editions of , yet every single one was illustrated by Tenniel. How sad, considering the plethora of options.

Finally, I wanted to voice my thanks for this month's topic. Being one of the folks who would never have given another shot without your inspiration, I have you to thank for an interesting read, and for a new tool for analyzing illustrations. :)
