My father read me Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass when I was five, but I remembered absolutely nothing about the books, other than that I felt very special being read a chapter book and that I preferred Alice to TTLG. So why did I replicate my mistake and read it to my daughter when she was five? She (now a sophomore in college) also remembers absolutely nothing of it. With this month's discussion, I now see the error of my ways. Of her reactions I remember that she loved Ned being shot from the chimney and cried when the oysters were eaten in The Walrus and the Carpenter. I also remember discussing the differences between the book and Disney movie with her. In The Hunger of Memory, Richard Rodriguez remembers that as a boy, he decided to read only "important" books, and spurned children's books, even classics, so he did not discover Alice until a college student. Maybe it was just as well. Christine M. Hill Willingboro Public Library One Salem Road Willingboro, NJ 08046 chill at willingboro.org My new book! Ten Terrific Authors for Teens, Enslow, 2000
