-Sorry Ruth and Ginny...but you DID begin and continue a discussion...and I do not want my voice or point of view silenced by merely sharing this "off line." I think the discussion of who gets to celebrate, discuss, ponder, and even mispronounce the names of children's book authors and dialect and so forth certainly is something pondering with everyone.
For a whole month now I've been trying to phrase my reply to Ruth's original message. As a long time fan of YOUNG ADULT NOVEL and other Pinkney books, I appreciate and laugh at each and every conversation between Daniel and Simon .
The books they delight in are--in a word-?lightful. It doesn't bother me that I know more about Shel Silverstein than they do. I'm just pleased they (and others who did not know about him) did "send good thoughts" after Silverstein's death. (And maybe recruit a few readers who also said: "Gee.
I don't know him, but I think my 10 year old once read me a poem of his.... or clue some of us in who hadn't heard about it before).
Because of this duo, I sought out and bought _I CROCODILE_ and read it aloud to the children's literature class I was teaching. The NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW featuring top children's books had just come out, but I hadn't read it yet. I live in New Mexico. It takes a long time information to make its way out here. NOONE publishes many review so this was the first I knew of this humerous tale. The reading by Simon/ Pinkney still makes me chuckle. And I bet I'm not alone.
Do we take ourselves so seriously that we can't laugh? Do we think our words should be the only ones represented to those who listen to National Public Radio? Do we even think the joyful "duo" means to "represent" all of children's literature??? I think not.
I adore Pinkwater's ironic point of view--and feel the power, the "sense of nonsense"in all he writes or shares. So--If you feel as I do
write to Simon and Daniel to say "Keep it up!" Come on! Let's laugh at ourselves a bit...remember "laugh and the world laughs with you..." Take care...and do read YOUNG ADULT NOVEL if you missed it. Jeanne Whitehouse Peterson
