Winding Down the Rabbit Hole

This month is drawing to an end which means the ccbcnet discussion on Alice is drawing to a close as well.

As I wrote at the beginning, I was somewhat dubious that this topic would result in much traffic as my sense is that few people read and use Alice with kids today. I was delighted by those of you who did participate. In particular, I was thrilled that this conversation resulted in some of you reading or rereading the book. Some of you looked into it for yourselves and some of you with your own children and grandchildren. I loved the different points that came out of your explorations and reveries. There were thoughts about growing up, about media and Disney, about language, about illustrations and illustrators, and more. It was terrific and I thank all who participated.

However, I think my original hunch has been confirmed. That this book is rarely experienced directly by children today. Very few wrote about their experiences of using the book with children: Steven Engelfried with his own children, Sheila Welch with her grandchild, and Susan Daugherty with her daughter at ages 5 and 12. (I'll exempt Maia whose child is probably too young for even The Nursery Alice.) As for Ginny's query, "I'm curious as to exactly how some of you teach Alice in Wonderland to children - if you do. And in how you use it - if you do - in the school or public library?" Well, I'm the only one who responded. So is it because those who do use it are lurkers on this list? Or because you experience the " vague feeling of unease when I think of the story." that Susan Daugherty referred to and stay clear of the book as a result? Or is it because you have heard vaguely unsavory (and, as Mike noted early on, most likely wrong) references to Carroll himself?

I'd love to be wrong and urge those of you who do use the book with children today come out of lurkdom and let us know about it. We've got a couple of days left to the month!
