Michael Cart, a nationally recognized expert on children's and young adult literature, will present a talk, "Welcome to Tomorrowland: Books for Young Readers of a New Millennium," at a program sponsored by the Friends of the Madden Library at California State University, Fresno. The program will be held in the Madden Library at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 17. Mr. Cart will discuss new trends in book publishing for today's children and teenagers, citing examples of top current choices.
Cart was honored in July by the America Library Association, which presented him with the 1999 Grolier Award, a lifetime achievement award given for an "unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people." He is featured on the cover of School Library Journal for September 2000.
In twelve years as director of the Beverly Hills Public Library, Cart made youth services one of the highest priorities. Retiring ten years ago, he turned to teaching, consulting, and writing. Well-known by librarians for his regular column in Booklist magazine, "Carte Blanche," he also hosts an award-winning television show, In Print, that airs on cable channels across the country. As President of the Young Adult Library Services Association, he led the effort to create the Michael L. Printz Award, the America Library Association's new prize for literary excellence in young adult literature.
Mr. Cart's books include What's So Funny: Wit and Humor in America Children's Literature and From Romance to Realism: Fifty Years of Growth and Change in Young Adult Literature. His most recent publication, Tomorrowland: 10 Stories About The Future, an anthology of short stories for young adults, was a Best Book for Young Adults. Copies of Tomorrowland will be available for sale and autographing at the program.
A graduate of Northwestern and Columbia Universities, Mr. Cart serves as an adjunct faculty member at UCLA and at Texas Woman's University. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the new Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature at California State University.
