It seems to me that to truly appreciate ALICE, you must sneak up on her. She should be in hardcover, with the Tenniel illustrations. She must be slightly dusty and ancient enough to have acquired "Old Book Smell." You must have the sensation, when opening the cover, of unlocking the creaking door to an old Victorian attic with a rusty skeleton key. And then you see her:
My, my, that's just the way I found her on my parents' bookshelf! I don't know if that book survived. If not, I will have to go out and find a dusty old copy for my daughters to perhaps stumble on... I think you're right it is the best way. If they don't though, I may break down and read it with them later--too good to totally miss.
