I don't think I've ever consider illustrations quite this way (if I understand your question, which I'm not totally sure I do!) I think Alice works well without illustrations at all. Some of my students prefer to simply listen to me read and look at the illustrations afterwards. They began as stories that Carroll told to the Liddell girls so it makes sense that they work without images (except those in your mind) too. There are those who argue that the story is inseparable from Tenniel's illustrations, but I don't agree. I think the text can work without illustrations at all (when read aloud), and with images done by other artists besides Tenniel. We talk about whatever comes up. I don't recollect, though, anything along the lines of what you have raised here.
