I had to laugh... I thought Victor was not studious but curious; Hermione was the only girl not ga-ga over him and Victor wanted to get to know her. He had no desire to study! (I have to admit that I began studying quite hard at my college library when I found out my later-to?-husband parked in a certain spot every night.) Rowling does a masterful job portraying realistic emotions and actions in the magical world she created.
