This is an aside to the discussion of The New York Times's new children's bestseller lists and it's a bit like a David-and-Goliath or a princess-and-the-pea story and it goes as follows: I was reading all of the discussion about how the Times's decision to change the bestseller lists was affecting the country and it never occurred to me, living in New York, that other papers picked it up and it was used nationally. Someone in Fresno said that the Fresno Bee carried the main list but now that the list was split there was no mention in her paper of any children's books at all. Well, I have a friend who is on the board of the Bee's parent company, who has listened to me harangue about children's books for 30 years, so I passed the comment on to him. When someone from Minneapolis also complained about the Minneapolis Star & Tribune (same company) I forwarded that as well. I never expected to hear anything back and I didn't until just a couple of days ago. Ellery sent me an email saying that Gary Pruitt, the president of the company, had gotten back to him with an update on the problem and that the Fresno Bee was about to instate publication of the children's bestseller list. Pruitt hadn't heard back yet from the Minneapolis paper. Someone listened!!! True, the Sacramento Bee has a wonderful book reviewer, Judy Green, and I don't know if she played a part in all of this or not, but I did think that the subscribers to the ccbc listserv would like to know what happened.
