Harry: an ordinary fellow

As I was re-reading Jonathan Hunt's message comparing Harry and Lyra, and thinking about Maia's comments about not liking Harry himself, I began thinking about how ordinary Harry is -- and that's exactly why so many children find him appealing, I think. I also found Lyra to be a much more resourceful character . . . I admire her bravery and strength. Harry, though so many people in his world think he is extraordinary, really is ordinary. He's basically a good sort of chap, and blessed with good friends -- I agree too that I probably wouldn't like the books much without Hermione -- there'd definitely be something missing. But this ordinariness is what allows children to identify with Harry . . . there's that irresistable appeal of "this could happen to me . . ."
