Female's in Harry Potter

I didn't think the females were in any way weak or un?veloped. I was happy from day one that Hermione was a character. She is quite confident and has a moral sense. I don't find her disagreeable at all. And that she persists in being part of a trio with Ron and Harry is really fun. In my local schools I don't see many girl/boy friendships and I hope my sons, who have very close girl friends, don't cave into peer pressure and give up on them. And when Mrs. Weasley was erroneously mad at Hermione, I think it showed that even as a great mother, she can really mess up.

McGonnagal is great. She almost always does exactly the right thing. Often goes overboard on taking points from the Griffindors, but shows that she really is a good egg in the end. Just how did she bend the rules in order to let Harry be a seeker in book I? I wish she was a little rougher on the Slytherins, or on Snape.

My thoughts on Victor Krum and the quidditch match were different than others mentioned. I thought that, in a way, she was making fun of organised professional sports. What is the difference between the veelas and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders? It seemed that the pre-game show was the same, either for quidditch or football. I loved the folly of the leprechaun gold, it was almost a hint that no one is what they seem. Victor himself was considered a celebrity, and pre-game publicity made him into one. But at Hogwarts, he was actually a shy 17 year old. It was always the other Durmstrang students that were making commotions, and Victor was always in the library. It seemed that he and Hermione were the most studious. No wonder she went to the dance with him. I don't think she was ever in awe of his athletic ability or presumed popularity.

One of the biggest surprises for me was a more indepth description of Dumbledor in this book. Up to this point, I had assumed that he was 'portly'. I believe that the word 'dumbledor' was an early name for bumblebees. So I took that to heart. But apparently he is a skinny sort of guy. Now I am worried about his health. :-). But I was intrigued with the light in his eye when he found out that Voldemort was back, almost as if he was up for a good fight.
