Just to extend Mary Ann's point a bit: we all have the capacity for evil; evil can be seductive. We get to choose which way we will go, even if circumstances or birth
(or the sorting hat) sets us off in a particular direction. (Another example would be Viktor Krum obviously preferring "good" Hogwarts to his own school.) This gives the characters so much more depth, obviously. The exception seems to be the Dahl-esque Dursleys...
