I heartily concur with Kris' comments. I worked with a 4th grade teacher who took it one step further. We did a "Betcha Can't Read Just One" booktalk that was really successful. We talked with the students about the facts that some series books are like potato chips or cotton candy. Tastes good, but not much nourishment. Then we went on to outline what made sequences of books more "nutritious" i.e. the characters grow and develop just as they do; the plots are varied, etc. The assignment: read at least 2 from a "sequence" of books. Things like Howe's Bunnicula series, Lowry's Anastasia books, Hurwitz's Aldo books, etc. The kids really dove into it. A good collaboration.
