truth potion

I am enjoying reading all of the thoughts about Harry and his cohorts and find myself thrilled to have other people's very intelligent words put to some of my vague thoughts. I wonder if anyone else was dissappointed in the tactics used by Dumbledore to ferret (no pun intended) the truth out of MC/Crouch. It seemed to me, administering the "truth potion" was not only an easy way out, but it also opened up the question of how this potion is used. Although I know this substance's use is tightly controlled by regulations, wouldn't one of the prime uses of such a "lie detector" be to determine legal decisions? In other words, why was this potion not used during the "trials" of the death eaters that Harry witnesses through the pensieve. Also, the parallel of the house-elves enslavement to African enslavement in the United States seemed to jump out at me (but they it) as an American reader and I assume J.K. Rowling is not going to drop this important question.
