I don't think it's been proven: Hitler's grandfather was illegitimate and went through hald his life as a Schicklegruber. No one knows for sure who his real father was, but he was very active in the virulently anti-Semitic pan-German movement. Why Hitler's grandmother was so anti-Semitic is the question. She apparently worked as a domestic for a Jewish family at one point. Austria was just pretty anti-Semitic.
