Just a quick note:
It seems to me that the reason this discussion of females in Harry Potter has gotten so obsessive and tedious is that it's being taken too seriously. Sometimes a simple discussion among friends or a simple wondering about an issue in a book starts carrying a lot of weight when it is discussed interminably in writing. Most people seem to like the Harry Potter books for a variety of reasons; some have simply wondered about this issue, as one of a number of issues up for discussion. I don't recall that anyone in this discussion has been greatly offended by the portrayal of females in these books or assumes that J.K. Rowling will have to rethink the future of the series now that we have spoken.
