Gosh, this conversation is vibrant and fun -- I FEEL THE NEED to join in.
Katy Horning struck a sensory cord for me when she wrote, "What could be a greater evil than Voldemort's arrogant and destructive notions of racial superiority? "
This theme of different/same, pure blood/mixed blood, superiority/inferiority is central to my reads. This is one reason why I LOVE looking at Hagrid now as a giant instead of simply my favorite, lovable large oaf. Go Giants, go...come save the wizardry world which I now know and love....
I, too, want to echo a repeated theme of how much fun I have (and share with dozens of children and adult readers) when we have these grand "ah has" -- the magical synapses when we suddenly see people and events in a new light and understanding.
I also want to add how much fortunate I feel to be participating in these books as they come out one book at a time. I sometimes wonder what it will be like after 2003 when kids have all seven of them and read them as a set (something like Lewis' or Tolkien).
Great stuff....
