Beverly Cleary

When I was in the third grade (1968) at a small town school in Kansas, The Mouse and the Motorcycle won the William Allen White Award. My class was not allowed to vote because you had to be at least in the 4th grade, but my third grade teacher read us several of the books on the nominated list and we had our own classroom election which the Mouse also won. Our school librarian, Mrs. Teagarten, made my class feel terrific because she told us how important our votes would be next year since we knew how to pick winners! Of course, I read every Beverly Cleary book in our school and public library. A few years later, Beverly Cleary was speaking at an event in nearby Wichita and Mrs. Teagarten took several students in her car to hear the speech. Between Beverly Cleary and Mrs. Teagarten, is it any wonder that I became a librarian?
