I would say, IZZY WILLY NILLY by Cynthia Voigt, and PEELING THE ONION by Wendy Orr. Both deal with popular young teens (girls) who must learn to come to terms with accidents that change their lives forever -- both books are both hard-hitting, but do portray the teens coping and may provide some hope. I am truly sorry to hear of your cousin's daughter's illness. Best wishes to her. I wish books were able to make it all better in addition to the small solace they can provide.
