While I was very glad that Beverly Cleary had been recognized with a Newbery Award (after all she had been bringing pleasure to young people for a long time), and while Dear Mr. Henshaw was absorbing to read -still, I mourned that Ms. Cleary had not been given the Newbery for Henry Huggins or any of the Ramona books; books that were endearing and, from what I was hearing from young people, loved more than Dear Mr. Henshaw would ever be. I wondered at the time, and still do, if the various Newbery committees over the years regarded humor as a lesser art.
