Dated? No! Cleary remembers what it was like to be little and relates the jealousies, disappointments and joys of being a child with humor, care and respect. I always read one Cleary book to my second graders every year. Last year we read the most recent book, Ramona's World. The children completely related to Ramona's new friendship with Daisy and felt sad when she got into all that trouble in the attic. The new baby scenes are wonderful and allows Ramona to experience life from Beezus's perspective: the big sister. They have always loved the sibling relationship between Beezus and Ramona especially.
I remember the following scenes of Ramona through tear-filled eyes: 1. the (blue??) oatmeal medium for growing fruit flies 2. the raw egg "shampoo" 3. Ramona at school with her jammies on under her clothes 4. the word Yard Ape 5. all Ramona's adjustments to school: new teachers, cursive, spelling 6. the boy who "doesn't go wee-wee in the sandbox" 7. the vomiting scene and the children lining up holding their noses 8. the meow-meow commercial 9. Beezus's first "date"
Long live Ramona and all her friends on Kickitat Street!
Robin Smith
PS My daughter's first love of cats was born when we read her "Socks." I still marvel at Cleary's ability to write from the cat's view.
