Henry, Beezus and Ramona

My favorite memory of all of Beverly Cleary's work is riding my bicycle one summer morning with a copy of Henry Huggins in the front basket. I was on my way to return the book to Miss Lorna Murphy, my second grade teacher. You see, I simply HAD to read the book, since I was going to third grade after all, and did not finish it by the time the school year ended. Imagine my astonishment when my beloved Miss Murphy suggested I take it home to finish over the summer. The only condition was that I enjoy the read and return the book to her when I finished. Both conditions were happily met!

Of course, I came to know and love the rest of the Cleary Gang like family and went on to share their latest installment with my own group of second graders. The circle continues!

THANK YOU, Beverly Cleary! Clark Underbakke Birmingham, AL

This month we will discuss the books of Beverly Cleary, in honor of the 50th Anniversary of her first published book, "Henry Huggins." As you may recall, the first line of the book was "Henry Huggins was in the third grade." In real time, he might just be putting in for early retirement today, but on Klickitat Street, he remains forever young. But Henry was soon overshadowed by his neighbors on Klickitat Street, Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby and her younger sister, Ramona, who has become something of a celebrity in her own right in the children's book world. We have seen Ramona go from pesky toddler to brave kindergartner to confident nine-year-old in just under 50 years.

How many of you remember reading the books about Henry, Beezus and Ramona when you were children yoursleves? What are some of your memories of them?
