Goodness! I was 4 when Beverly Cleary first published those Huggins books, and because we were so poor, we did not have contact with them as children. My mother read to us the really old stuff like Louisa May Alcott and the Little Pepper books. My daughter was not interested in the Henry Huggins books as a child, preferring fantasy and science fiction (a la John Bellairs). However, my fondest memories (and his, it turns out) were of reading these books to my 22 year old son when he was 7 and 8. Max hated to read fiction, but loved to be read to, and he loved all of these Cleary books. His classmates were not familiar with them, so he was somewhat of a celebrity when he talked about them in class. Does anyone think that kids today might find Henry Huggins and his neighborhood dated now? I loved that time, as it reminded me of my own childhood. But I wonder what kids today think?
