I have been enjoying this discussion so much. I do have a question about the Ramona books. Like Cleary's others, these have such respect for her characters, as well as humor. They--or at least the first books about Ramona--are the earliest children's books I know of in which the main character is younger than the likely readers. More recent titles featuring a very young protagonist include Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones books and Lois Lowry's Sam series. But was Cleary the first contemporary children's book writer to try something like this?
