Last year Jazan Higgins, Lori Benton and I went out to the University of California at Berkeley, where a dormitory was being named for Beverly Cleary. It turned out that the students in this pronouncedly multi-ethnic dormitory had resoundingly voted to name the dorm in honor of Beverly Cleary because so many of them had read her books as children and been influenced strongly by them. It was extremely moving to hear the students' speeches. Each looked forward to reading Beverly Cleary's books to his or her own children, and one had the sense of a torch being passed....
