I was born too early for Henry and Ramona, growing up instead with Betsy, Tacy, and Tib, but have always felt grateful to Beverly Cleary because her books have been sure winners with the second and third graders I've had. Just as she captures a child's feelings so wonderfully, she seems to understand dogs-- "Ribsy" has been a much-loved (and laughed over) book by both boys and girls. Several girls who had read all the Henry- Beesuz-Ramona books went on to read "Emily's Runaway Imagination" and felt very close to an author who has such understanding of children, and sought out information about her.
And I was always delighted by the number of parents who became engrossed in the books. It certainly seems to me that these are books that will live on!
