You are invited to attend the 27th Congress of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) will be held on Sept. 18" in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The theme is "The New World for a New World: Children's Books for the New Millennium." Anyone interested is invited to attend. Large group sessions will be simultaneously translated. This is an outstanding opportunity to meet and talk with other women and men committed to children's literacy and books & reading from nations all over the world, including other south and central American nations, and also from nations such as Thailand, Iran, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Greece, India, Australia, Egypt, etc.

The Congress will examine the role played by children's literature in the cultural encounter between the American continent and others. Conference topics include autonomies and integration and multiculturalism; utopia and literature for children; social function, democratization, and access to literature; image and culture; ethics and literature for children; the reader of the twenty-first century; book dialectics and new technologies; and two worlds meeting. Panel discussions and seminar sessions will be held as well.

The 2000 Hans Christian Andersen Awards will be presented during this Congress to Anthony Browne and Ana Maria Machado.

These congresses are incredible opportunities on many levels, well worth planning to attend. The hosts in Colombia have arranged for airport shuttles and many other conveniences for attendees.
